Why not marry?

为什么不结婚?

Not marrying is not failure. Real reasons, costs, and answers to pressure.

“Not marrying means irresponsible or broken” is humiliation, not analysis. Many people choose not to marry with clear eyes: legal and financial independence; distrust of how the institution protects the weaker party; refusal to bind intimacy to clan duty; orientation or partner wishes outside the current frame; or harm inside a prior marriage. This essay writes “why not” without crowning it as the only virtue.

Real reasons

  1. Keeping autonomy. Housing, money, time, and exit need not pass through a certificate first.
  2. Seeing institutional risk. Marriage can deepen dependence or make leaving harder.
  3. Intimacy need not equal a licence. Companionship, fidelity, and care can exist outside marriage.
  4. Family structures that deter. Bride-price fights, in-law politics, holiday duty, endless negotiation.
  5. Value mismatch. Children, traditional roles, or religious form—one wants, the other does not.
  6. Repair before another bind. Stabilise health, debt, or trauma rather than prove “normal” with a wedding.

Costs

Pressure, more paperwork for medical and inheritance plans, fewer rituals, different later-life care planning. Costs are real; they do not mean you should marry.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Am I refusing marriage, or refusing a controlling relationship?
  • Would my answer change with someone open to equal arrangements?
  • Am I using “not marrying” as a shield against intimacy?
  • Have I arranged wills and medical directives another way?

How to name pressure talk

“No one will want you” sells panic. “Marry once for your parents” ties filial duty to a contract. Answer: I have plans for intimacy and care; marriage is not my proof of filial piety.
