You notice them in the corridor before the bell. You save a seat and then pretend you did not. Your day has a new centre, and it is slightly ridiculous, and also completely real. Liking someone is the wish to move closer. You want to know them a little more. You let them take up space in your ordinary hours.
The feeling can be loud. It can also be quiet. It can last a week or a season. None of that makes you foolish. The feeling itself is not a fault.
What this is
Liking is interest plus a pull. You want their laugh, their opinion, their company on the way to the bus. You may feel shy, brave, or both before lunch. You may tell a friend first. That is still liking. It does not have to look like a film to count.
A wish is not a claim. They do not owe you a yes because you feel a lot. They do not owe you a reply because you were kind. You can hope. You cannot book their answer in advance. If they like you too, the same rule stands the other way. Their liking is not a handle on your life.
What this is not
Liking is not a right to their time, their photos, or their body. It is not a reason to spread a rumour so they have to deal with you. It is not proof that you must drop your friends, your sleep, or your work. And it is not a promise that if you like them enough, they will stay.
It is also not a shame. You do not have to crush the feeling to be a serious person. You do have to keep it from becoming pressure. If someone likes you and will not take a no, that is not a bigger version of this feeling. That is a problem. Tell a trusted adult. If you are in danger, contact local emergency services, and see help resources when you can.
What you can do
Keep the feeling honest, and leave their choice where it belongs.
A line worth passing on
Liking is a wish to come closer, not a right to an answer.
