Watch the small room, not the speech. A person can praise you at a wedding and still talk over you in the taxi home. A person can say they admire strong women and still sulk for two days because you kept a Thursday with a friend. Respect is not the warm line. It is what they do with your no, your time, and a choice they did not design.
If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services now. Move to a safer place if you can, and tell someone you trust. Do not confront a person who is threatening you, and do not share a safety plan with them. When you can do so safely, see help resources. What this is
Choosing respect means you treat behaviour as the evidence and praise as decoration. A respectful person can dislike your answer and still leave it standing. They ask before they assume. They do not punish a delay. They speak about you, in front of others, as someone with a mind. They can repair after a sharp moment without making the repair your job alone. They keep a confidence. They do not use money, sex, family, or fear as a way to close a discussion.
You can look early, before the shared lease and the family chat and the story that leaving would embarrass you. Notice how they treat a waiter, a sibling, an ex they do not have to impress. Notice whether your friends become a problem the moment they are not an audience. Notice whether a no is information or a challenge they mean to wear down.
What this is not
This is not a checklist that guarantees a safe future, and it is not a reason to ignore a clear no from your own body because the public manners are good. It is not a demand that you find someone perfect. Everyone has a sharp day. The question is whether the sharp day is followed by a real change, or by a story in which you were the problem for noticing.
It is not true that if you explain respect more clearly, a person who enjoys the upper hand will become careful. Some will not. A better description of what you need will not make them stay in a respectful way. If you are choosing away from someone who threatens you, do not announce the choice in the same room. This page is general education, not medical, legal or therapeutic advice.
What you can do
Choose with your eyes on what happens after a limit, not on the first good month.
A line worth passing on
Respect is what someone does with your no, your time, and your choice.
