How do I recognise a hot-and-cold pattern?

Three warm days, then nothing. You stand in the supermarket aisle and check the phone as if the answer might be under the rice. When the message finally comes, bright and casual, the relief is so large you call it love. You forget the two nights you did not sleep. You tell a friend it is complicated, which has become a polite name for a pattern you already know by heart.

If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services now. Move to a safer place if you can, and tell someone you trust. Do not confront a person who is threatening you, and do not share a safety plan with them. When you can do so safely, see help resources. This page is general education, not medical, legal or therapeutic advice.

What this is

A hot-and-cold pattern is closeness followed by withdrawal, on a loop. The warm patch can be real: attention, plans, a voice that makes the week feel chosen. The cold can be silence, a short reply, a cancelled evening, a sudden chill after you asked for something plain. The loop trains you to chase the next warm patch. Relief starts to feel like intimacy, because your body has just been dropped and caught.

The pattern can come from fear, poor skill, a crowded life, or a wish to keep the upper hand. You do not have to decide the motive in order to see the effect. What matters is whether you can count on a reply, a plan, and a repair, or whether you live between drought and flood. Stable love is allowed to have a quiet week. It does not use disappearance as a lesson.

What this is not

It is not proof that you are addicted, dramatic, or too much. A nervous system will reach for the thing that just stopped hurting. It is not the same as someone who is simply busy and says so. Busy has a sentence in it. Cold as punishment does not. After you say no, after you see a friend, after you ask a direct question, the temperature drops on purpose. That is not a mood. That is a method.

This is not a puzzle a better text will solve. You can write the most careful message in the world and still not make someone stay, steady, or kind. Do not use this page to talk yourself into one more round of warming them up. If the cold comes with threats, tracking, isolation from friends, or harm, you do not owe them a conversation about the pattern. Leave the analysis. Use the safety step above.

What you can do

Look at the loop as a calendar, not as a romance you must decode.

For two weeks, note only facts: when they were warm, when they went cold, and what you had asked for just before. Do not write a theory about their childhood. Facts are enough to see whether the cold is random or a reply to your no.
When the next warm patch arrives, do not decide the relationship inside the relief. Wait one ordinary day. Ask, once, what they want when they are not disappearing. A person who respects you can answer without making you earn the answer by chasing.
Keep one plan with someone else on the cold days, a walk, a shift meal, a call that is not about them. If leaving the loop is unsafe, do not announce it in the same room. Tell a trusted person and use local emergency services if you are in danger.

A line worth passing on

Warm then cold can hook you. It is not the same as steady care.
