What can a parent do if a child will not talk?

You ask how school was. You get a shrug. You ask about the person. The door of the room closes with more care than necessary. You can feel the speech gathering, the one about trust and honesty and everything you have done for them. They can feel it too. Silence, in that house, is safer than a sentence. A child who will not talk is not always refusing you. They may be refusing the court that the last talk became.

If anyone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services now. Move to a safer place if you can. Do not make a child confront a person who has harmed or threatened them. Do not share a safety plan with that person. When you can do so safely, see help resources. This page is general education, not medical, legal or therapeutic advice.

What this is

When a child will not talk, the useful move is to lower the cost of a small truth. A walk, a lift, a message that does not require a reply tonight. You do not have to tell me everything today. I will not raise this at dinner. You create a door that is small enough to use. The aim is not a confession. It is a path that still exists tomorrow.

You can also act without the story. If you fear harm, you do not need a full account to change a pickup, to keep them home, to call a doctor, to speak to a school safeguarding lead, or to contact local emergency services. Say what you noticed. I am doing this because I think you may be unsafe, not because you failed to explain yourself. Forced talking is not closeness. It is another reason to hide.

What this is not

This is not a licence to ignore a closed door while danger sits behind it. Privacy and secrecy are not the same. It is not helped by more surveillance as the first answer to silence, especially if the surveillance is announced as punishment. It is not a failure of yours that a teenager has a private life. It becomes a problem when the privacy includes fear, a person who isolates them, or a no that is not respected.

Do not scold them for the silence, and do not threaten the relationship in order to buy a sentence. I will not love you if you do not talk is a line that ends talking. This page is general education, not medical, legal or therapeutic advice. A gentler question will not make every child confide, and it will not make a harmful situation resolve itself.

What you can do

Offer a smaller door, and do not pretend that warmth replaces safety.

Replace the full inquiry with one line they can ignore. I am around after nine if you want a walk. No debrief. Then be around. A door you advertise and do not open teaches them that the offer was a tactic.
If they give you a fragment, do not upgrade it into a summit. Thank them. Ask if they want a question or just a witness. Keep relatives out of it. The next fragment depends on what you did with this one.
If you believe someone is hurting them, say the belief and the action. I am worried you are not safe. I am going to get help even if you cannot tell me the rest tonight. Do not make them confront anyone. Contact local emergency services if the danger is now, and see help when you can do so without exposing them.

A line worth passing on

When a child will not talk, shrink the courtroom. Keep a small door open, and act on safety if harm is in the room.
