What is the difference between divorce and separation?
This entry distinguishes divorce, which ends the marriage in law, from separation, in which a couple lives apart or agrees to part while the marriage still exists. It notes that daily speech uses the words loosely, and that some places give separation a legal status while others do not.
What this entry does not do
It is not a filing guide and does not interpret divorce or separation law in any court.
