What is common-law marriage?
This entry explains common-law marriage, in ordinary language, as a claim in some places that a couple is married because of how they have lived, without a ceremony or a license. It notes that many places do not recognize that status, and that living together by itself is not a marriage everywhere.
What this entry does not do
It is not legal advice and does not say whether a particular couple is married under any law.
