The Relationship Cure

关系的疗方

John Gottman and Joan DeClaire

What it is about

The Relationship Cure centres Gottman’s idea of the bid for connection: a glance, a comment, a touch, or a shared joke that asks, in effect, “Will you turn toward me?” Gottman and DeClaire show that marriages feel inhabited or empty less because of grand gestures than because of how often partners turn toward, turn away, or turn against those small bids. The book teaches how to notice bids in ordinary talk, how emotional command systems colour what each person is asking for, and how a pattern of missed bids drains fondness over time. It is the bids book on this shelf, not a second copy of the seven principles and not a clinical protocol for coercive control.

Questions it can answer

  • What is a bid for connection, and how do turn toward, turn away, and turn against differ?
  • How can noticing small bids change whether a marriage feels inhabited day to day?
  • What does this book add that naming the seven principles alone does not already cover?

What you will not find

  • A second copy of The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work
  • A safety plan for one-sided violence or coercive control
  • A verdict on whether a particular couple should stay or leave
