The New Rules of Marriage

Terrence Real
What it is about
The New Rules of Marriage is Terrence Real’s practical map of Relational Life Therapy, written before Us, for couples who protect themselves by scoring each other. He treats the relationship as a third thing both people are responsible for, and he draws a line between anger and disrespect: contempt, control, retaliation, and punishing withdrawal. The working practices are what he calls full-respect living, a boundary that contains one’s own attack, a boundary that refuses mistreatment, and a pause so that the person speaking can still protect the bond. It is a clinical stance for ordinary marriage, not a restoration of older gender rules, and not the later book’s longer account of shame and the adaptive child.
Questions it can answer
- How does scorekeeping differ from taking responsibility for the relationship itself?
- Where does Real place the line between anger and disrespect?
- What are the containing boundary and the protective boundary meant to do in a fight?
What you will not find
- A laboratory scoring system for conflict
- Legal steps for divorce or property
- The later book’s longer account of shame and the adaptive child, restated in full
